Marta Malowanczyk is a Berlin-based filmmaker born in Gdansk.
As a young girl, she and her family escaped communist Poland via Sweden, eventually settling in Bremen, Germany. She went on to study Film & TV Directing, Graphic Design, and New Media at the Academy of Art and Design Kassel.
A defining spark came in her teenage years when watching Twin Peaks, which opened her eyes to the boundless possibilities of cinema. In 2002 she launched her film production platform, Nervous Pet Pictures, producing early works such as Über Rusbad (Super-8/16mm), Der Nachtportier, and Fünf (Tomato Global Workshop 2003), following an internship at the renowned Camera Rental Studio Hamburg.
She graduated with honours with her feature-length graduation film Marla (2007), which went on to be nominated for the prestigious First Steps Award and received international recognition. Marla won prizes including the Golden Hercules at the Kassel Documentary Film & Video Festival (2007), the Independent Student Platinum Remi Award at WorldFest Houston (USA, 2008), and was honoured with the seal of approval Prädikat Wertvoll from the German Film & Media Review Institution in Wiesbaden.
In 2007, Marta relocated to Berlin, where she began working as an assistant director and editor across diverse film and TV genres. Alongside this work, she has continued directing and developing her own projects.
Her works are currently archived in the mediaartbase.de collection of the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe. She is now in development on her debut feature film.
